They may not have had a spectacular regular season but when it came to the important games, the Lockerby Viking girls’ flag football players got the job done.
The team became the city champions in the girls’ high school flag football league after defeating the Lasalle Lancers 2-0 at the Cambrian College football field on Thursday evening.
It was the second straight year the two teams met in the final for the flag football title.
Sarah Wendler of Lockerby said she and her teammates expected a tight-scoring, defensive game.
“We knew whoever put the points up first would get to ride on that,” she said.
And that is exactly what Lockerby did, grudgingly sharing only the middle of the field with Lasalle.
Wendler had praise for her opponents.
“(Lasalle) beat us pretty good” during the regular season, she said. “And Notre Dame did, too, but we always come back.”
Lockerby got into the final game by defeating Notre Dame in the semi-final game 7-0 on Wednesday evening.
Notre Dame had finished the regular season in first place.
Lasalle got into the final game with a 14-0 semi-final win over the St. Charles Cardinals on Wednesday evening.
Lasalle head coach Len Van Dyke had praise for his players, saying they played well but came out flat, allowing Lockerby to get a jump on them.
Wayne Losier, also a coach with the Lasalle team, said that his charges played hard but never seemed to get on track once they fell behind.
Lockerby coach Marnie Staffen, who also serves as the league convener, said it was a great season for the league and for her team.
“There were a couple of games that were up and down, games that should have been won that weren’t, but making it to the playoffs is what it is all about,” she said of her team’s efforts. “The regular season is the regular season. As long as you can get into the playoffs, anything can happen.
“We are really glad to be here,” she added.
Carolyn Truskoski scored Lockerby’s two points.
This is the third year Lockerby has claimed the championship title, beating Lasalle last year by a 6-1 margin.
