Football rises again in Sudbury
Paul Sauve / Northern Life
The Sudbury Northeners finished their football season this past weekend in Ottawa. The young men between the ages of 16 and 20 did not win one game against more experienced and older teams. The eight games that they played were great learning situations.
Congratulations to the players and coaches. Now that this program has started the rest of the football community should come together and encourage all kids to play.
The future looks good for football in this city again since the Joe MacDonald league started a few years ago. The proof is that a few years ago there were only two high schools playing football and one other team called the Blues coached by Sid Forster.
I believe that this year there will be eight schools with a football program.
The Northeners have filled a void in the city and should provide players to the Spartans very shortly.
This city has enough players to participate at all levels, let us not follow the lead of hockey and soccer by splitting the community. It is time for the whole community to come together and support all programs.
High schools have benefitted from the Joe MacDonald program, it is time for the high school coaches to support the Northeners.
